Happy New Year! We look forward to welcoming students back from break on Tuesday, January 3.

Fourth graders had fun playing the dreidel game after learning about Hanukkah and its traditions.

North Jefferson's fifth graders enjoyed a visit from local author, Dr. Joan Ruddiman! She shared from her award-winning books as well as some of the fun activities found inside. A big thank you to Dr. Ruddiman for sharing your work and creativity with us!

Fourth and fifth graders at North Jefferson brought learning to life with some fun arcade games they designed and built! Afterwards, they enjoyed trying out each arcade game. As a culminating event, they invited their first grade buddies to visit their arcade to play their games. First graders made a donation in exchange for playing, which was in turn donated to the Animal Welfare Society of Jefferson County. Way to go, STARS!

Fourth and fifth graders recently joined the first graders for some festive fun! The fourth and fifth graders helped their younger buddies write letters to Santa, practice phonemic awareness and play holiday math games.

It looks like Cindy Lou Who and the Grinch made a trip from Whoville to visit students at North Jefferson today!

After studying the brain, first graders at North Jefferson enjoyed some hands-on learning from a neuroscientist. He had students use their hands to get a visual idea of the size of the brain. He provided a brief description of what each area controls, mainly focused on the senses. He also brought in a sensory bag, that represented the weight and texture of a brain, that students were able to hold and manipulate. Afterwards, students made playdough models of the brain's centers. Thank you to Mr. Ryder for an awesome learning experience!

North Jefferson's students had some festive fun in fourth grade! Students created gingerbread houses as they learned about perimeter and area, and students enjoyed a STEM activity to watch the Grinch's heart grow.

Students in first and fifth grades have enjoyed meeting once a week for some buddy reading time.

Fourth graders in Mrs. Harman's class enjoyed sharing their poetry at the "Poetry Cafe." Students munched on some tasty treats while they listened to each other's poetry. Way to go, young poets!

A big thank you to Victory Freewill Baptist Church for supplying North Jefferson's staff with Martin's gift cards AND for helping with Holidays Around the World!

A big thank you to The Rotary Club of Shepherdstown!

We're pleased to bring holiday cheer to neurodiverse students and their families again this year with the second annual JCS Sensory Santa! This event gives sensory-sensitive children and their families a chance to visit Santa in a calmer, less-chaotic environment. The fun continues the weekend thanks to our student and staff volunteers!

North Jefferson's students and families enjoyed celebrating Holidays Around the World! Participants began the evening with dinner and then rotated through stations to learn about holidays celebrated in other cultures. Some of the events included learning about Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, writing letters to Santa, enjoying hot cocoa and cookies, and a visit to Santa Claus!

National Special Education Day commemorates the signing of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) into law in 1975, granting children with special needs access to free and quality public education. Today we recognize and celebrate our incredible special education community at JCS with a heartfelt THANK YOU to the teachers and aides who serve some of our most exceptional learners. 💙💛💙💛

North Jefferson would like to thank the Jefferson County Community Educational Outreach Service (CEOS) for presenting our media specialist, Mrs. Layman, with a check for $200 to purchase new books for the school's library. Thank you for your generosity!

North Jefferson's K-Kids worked hard this month collecting and counting food items for their annual food drive. As a school, North Jefferson collected over 1,200 food items to give to Community Ministries and the Animal Welfare Society of Jefferson County! Way to go, North Jefferson!

Happy Thanksgiving to our JCS community! We remain grateful for the privilege of serving your children.
