Thank you to ALL of our volunteers who gave up their time to come to SJES and assist our students with their tie dye project! We could not have done it without you!!!

After many years of rising scores on the WVGSA test, JCS saw a steep decline during the pandemic, from which we have not recovered. The latest scores show staggering deficits in ELA and math that keep hundreds of children below the mark for proficiency. To ensure that our students are ready for academics and life beyond the classroom, we are adjusting our elementary education program for 3-5 grade students. Please visit www.jcswv.org/expansion to learn more. There will be a district-wide TWO-HOUR EARLY DISMISSAL for all students on Friday, Oct. 7, 2022, to support teachers as they prepare to make these adjustments. Thank you for your trust and support.

JCS is still hiring substitute teachers to fill short and long-term positions for this school year! Interested in substituting for JCS? Here's everything you need to know about the required training offered through our partnership with the Eastern Panhandle Instructional Cooperative (EPIC). EPIC offers the training you need to be eligible to apply for open positions. Visit www.epicresa8.org/subteachertraining to learn more, and follow our JCS Careers Facebook page at www.facebook.com/JoinJCS to learn about new positions as they become available!

I want to thank everyone for helping our first couple of weeks go smoothly….we’re still settling into a routine (3 day weekends throw those off, especially for our youngest students!) and each day gets better and better.
I’m just always grateful for the community’s support because it is so helpful and I want you to know that it does not go unnoticed.
Thank you!

Have a great weekend.

Hello everyone! I am the band director at Charles Town Middle School. I hope your students are interested in learning a band instrument in 5th grade with the 5th grade band instructors, Mr. Cookus and Mrs. Vickers. If you have any questions about band, don’t hesitate to ask. You can email me at rvallen@k12.wv.us.Here is a video that could help them choose their instrument. https://youtu.be/b7y75yjilrA

Hello JCS Families,
We had a wonderful first week of school welcoming children back into the classroom. We are happy to share an update on WVEIS 2.0, the WVDE’s upgraded information system that impacts our communications and academic tools. Much progress has been made, and as of Sept. 6, we will have full use of our Canvas Platform. For more information about the update, please visit www.jcswv.org/canvas

Good morning! We will have a menu change to chicken nuggets on Thursday, August 25th.
Thank you!
Ms. Mahoney

Our “first” day with our newest kindergarten students went very well! Thank you to everyone for your patience as we navigated our arrival and dismissal, with close to 75 additional students. As we work through the logistics, your flexibility is so very much appreciated. This amazing staff has led two awesome days of “back to school”. Even though we may not be learning and instructing in the traditional sense of the word, please know that your children are taking in an abundance of new information. They are managing a lot of details and I’m sure they’re tired at the end of the day (maybe that’s just me! 😉😂). If you add in the Fair on top of the first week, they most likely need lots of rest!
We look forward to seeing you at Meet the Teacher/Back to School Night on Monday, August 29th, from 5:00-7:00 pm.
Thanks again for starting our week off on such a positive note!
💜

✨ We're so excited to open our doors for the start of another school year! A big shoutout to our teachers and staff for working hard to prepare for a great year. Be sure to check out all the fun first-day photos from throughout the district in our "Back to School: 2022-2023" photo album on the JCS Facebook page. Welcome back, JCS! 🎉

Welcome back, Roadrunners!

The start of a new school year means sharing the road. Please keep the following safety tips in mind when buses start rolling on Monday:
⚠️ Be alert and watch for children, especially near schools, bus stops, school buses, and school parking lots.
⚠️ Motorists are required to stop when approaching a school bus that is stopped with its red lights flashing and STOP arms extended. NEVER pass a bus from behind when it is stopped to board or offload children.
⚠️ Be especially careful when children are present in school zones and residential areas.
⚠️ Pay extra attention to lower speed limits in school zones.
⚠️ Watch for and obey signals from school crossing guards.
⚠️Only drive or park in authorized areas to drop off or pick up children at school.
We can't wait to see you on Monday!

Hello, South Jefferson families!
We are close to showtime, with the school year beginning on Monday, August 22nd, bright and early. 💜
A few things to share:
1. Our doors open at 8:35 a.m.
2. If you are privately transporting your child to school, we ask that you drop off our PreK, Kindergarten and First Grade students at the parent loop (rider circle). Our Second Grade and Fifth Grade students will utilize the MAIN ENTRANCE at the front of the school UNTIL there are buses in the bus lane. Riders can arrive between 8:35 and 8:45. When you see a bus in the bus lane, please go to the parent loop for drop off instead.
3. Our Fourth and Third Grade students will enter through their classroom doors and can be dropped off in the bus lane from 8:35 - 8:45. Again, if there is a bus in the bus lane, please go to the parent loop for drop off instead.
4. I know this sounds confusing, but I assure you we are here to help you, with PLENTY of staff members located throughout the property to guide you and assist our students. We will have class lists to help our students who are unsure where to go. There will be signs showing the way, as well.
5. The bell will ring at 8:55 a.m. to begin our day and the doors will be closed and secured. IF you and your child arrive after 8:55 a.m., please escort him/her to the main entrance so that we can sign them in.
6. Our announcements begin at 8:55 a.m. and instruction begins at 9:00 a.m.
7. Meals will not be free this year. Breakfast cost: $1.25 Lunch cost: $1.50. Extra milk cost: $.25. Menus and payment information can be found on our website: jcswv.org
8. Dismissal begins with car riders in the parent loop at 3:30 p.m. Bus dismissal will begin around 3:40 p.m. in the bus lane.
9. PLEASE be patient as we work out the kinks and teach our new families the “SJES way”. Dismissal is going to take longer for the first couple of weeks. Don’t panic if the bus is a little late. It takes time to teach almost 450 students how to exit the building.
10. My suggestion is to NOT arrive for rider dismissal all at once, at 3:30 pm. We have many car riders and the process is a little more difficult at first.
11. If your child will be a car rider EVERY day, you will be given a car rider tag to display/hang on your rear view mirror. This helps us identify you quickly so that we can alert your child’s teacher and have your child ready for dismissal. While we learn your faces, we will be asking you to have ID ready to go, as you pull into the property.
12. If you already have a rider tag from previous years, we will be using the same numbers so you’re good to go.
13. Safety will always be our priority so PLEASE pay close attention, especially during the first couple of weeks of school, when you are on our property. Students and families are learning new processes and everyone working together will make this a successful year for all of us.
14. Our entrance is very limited, in terms of how many buses and cars we can have on the property. PLEASE be vigilant and maintain your own safety as you enter and exit the property.
15. Smile. Smile when you arrive. Smile when you drop off your child. Smile when you greet our awesome staff members. Smile when you welcome your children after their school day. Smiling truly is contagious. I promise. 😉
As always, I thank you for your support, your patience, your flexibility and your kindness. We are all in this together and want this to be the most fantastic school year for every child in our community. You are a big part of that success.
Looking forward to the 22-23 school year!
💜💛
Ms. Mahoney

Hello JCS Families,
Our staff have been working all summer to prepare our schools to welcome students next week. As always, there are unexpected problems that arise. An updated version of the West Virginia Department of Education's information system (WVEIS) that all school systems are required to use for everything from class lists to schedules is being upgraded. Some of the systems we worked hard to put in place over the summer are not usable right now because that system is not functioning correctly. We have created a web page about possible changes during the transition. We have taken steps to minimize the disruption for you and for students while the WVDE completes this work. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we begin a new year together! https://www.jcswv.org/wveis
