Wildwood Middle School was proud to see the patriotism of our students during Celebrate Freedom Week! It was wonderful learning about the founding of our country, the values on which it was established, and the sacrifices made in the name of freedom.

Many people think missing a few days of school each month is not a big deal. But absences add up quickly, and too many - excused or unexcused - can have a negative impact on academic achievement. Students who miss fewer than nine days of school see better grades, stay on track to graduate high school, and even have better work habits! A longstanding dream was fulfilled at Wildwood Middle School last week when vegetables that students planted in raised beds last spring made it to the lunchtime salad bar. Thanks to a grant from WVDE, WMS was able to purchase raised bed kits, soil, gardening tools, and seeds. Students assembled the kits, shoveled the soil, planted the seeds, and watered all summer long. The end result was sweet.....and savory! Cherry tomatoes and green peppers were a great addition to the taco and salad bar, as well as cucumbers for the salad. PE students even got in on the fun as they sampled cherry tomatoes after their weekly PACER run. We are so proud of the hard work put in by our students and look forward to more planting, harvesting, and eating the fruits of our labor!

During Ms Masterson's 8th grade English unit on the Holocaust, students are reading the play "The Diary of Anne Frank". Using classroom space as the attic and classroom supplies as props, they enthusiastically act out the drama. There's even a cat!

National Arts in Education Week celebrates the value of the arts in our schools and classrooms. #BecauseOfArtsEd, our students often have the opportunity to participate in arts-inspired events and showcases at the regional, state, and national levels. Thank you to our JCS educators who work tirelessly to inspire this type of dedication, creativity, and love of the arts in our students!

Today, we remember and reflect.

The Mustangs were busy learning about how to use the Mary Weyant Media Center this week. Media Specialist Mrs. Long orientated them to the procedures and opportunities available to them at the MWMC!

Dear JCS Families: Jefferson County Schools puts the safety of students and staff first. With temperatures expected this week to reach the mid to upper 90’s, we are taking proactive steps to prevent heat-related illnesses. That means limiting outdoor activities at elementary, middle, and high schools when a heat advisory or warning is in place for Jefferson County. Limitations apply to any physical education classes, outdoor classrooms, field trips, and recess activities. For athletics, we will follow WVSSAC guidelines and consult with certified athletic trainers and medical doctors before making a final decision about practice or games. Current guidelines include safety measures such as practicing without pads, eliminating conditioning activities, moving indoors, or limiting practice time. We recognize the importance of providing appropriate practice time and games and will do what we can to ensure our student-athletes can prepare and compete safely. Schedule changes will be communicated as quickly as possible to limit potential disruption to students and families. We appreciate your support of our students.

This week, Mr. A's 7th graders combined learning a little about each other with learning how to make a hypothesis. What could they say they all had in common? Making their own hypothesis and gathering data comes next!

Don't forget that tomorrow evening we will be holding our Back to School Night from 6:00-8:00 pm. There will be games, prizes, information tables and concessions. This is also your chance to meet the teachers. Hope to see you there.

There's still time to visit the Stuff-A-Bus drop-off location at the Jefferson County Fair and donate school supplies for our students!
