JCS joined other schools across West Virginia this week in a celebration of freedom! Celebrate Freedom Week was established to educate WV students about the founding of the United States, the values on which it was established, and the sacrifices made in the name of freedom. JCS students and staff decorated their schools and classrooms, participated in special activities, and proudly wore their Red, White, and Blue!

This week, we celebrate our first Students of the Week for the 23-24 school year. Third grader, James North, and kindergartener, Alaina Hernandez, have been chosen to represent our school by demonstrating hard work and personal growth. We are proud of both of our students and thank them for leading by example!
💛🎉💜

Many people think missing a few days of school each month is not a big deal. But absences add up quickly, and too many - excused or unexcused - can have a negative impact on academic achievement. Students who miss fewer than nine days of school see better grades, stay on track to graduate high school, and even have better work habits! Way to go, Ensley Clark! She was nominated by her kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Zimmerman, for helping out fellow classmates and for being such a kind friend. Our school is awesome because of the students who show kindness like Ensley! Super proud of her!

National Arts in Education Week celebrates the value of the arts in our schools and classrooms. #BecauseOfArtsEd, our students often have the opportunity to participate in arts-inspired events and showcases at the regional, state, and national levels. Thank you to our JCS educators who work tirelessly to inspire this type of dedication, creativity, and love of the arts in our students!

Mrs. Fox’s kindergarten class had fun sorting and making line formations today. So many important steps to begin the writing and reading process. Well done!

South Jefferson welcomed back former SJES student AND current Miss West Virginia, Karrington Childress, to visit Ms. Horne’s Kindergarten class today! Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to read to our students!
💜💛👑📚👸🏼

Today, we remember and reflect.

Here’s to Mia Vigil and Love Jones, who earned Positive Principal Referrals for showing compassion and kindness to a student who was struggling in class. Both girls encouraged and supported the student, providing words of advice and offering to help him tackle the assignment. What a wonderful example for everyone at SJES! So proud of you both! 🙌🏼

Did you know Jefferson County Schools has a Parent and Education Resource Center? That's right, and our PERC is already working hard to organize activities to help connect our students across the district. If you are interested in learning more about PERC, are looking for resources to support a student, or simply want to come out and make new friends, be sure to visit www.jcswv.org/perc.

Mrs. Sunday’s 4th grade class used the STEAM lab today to practice using the engineering process to solve a problem. Sounds like fun and judging by these smiles, I’d say it was! Problem: Make a way to hold a water bottle for easy drinking without holding on to it. Awesome! 👏🏼🎉

A huge shout out to Jeremiah O'Banion for his Positive Principal Referral! He was nominated for helping EVERY classmate during a math game. Thank you for being an awesome and helpful role model, Jeremiah!

Congratulations to kindergartener, Bianca Santiago, for her Positive Principal Referral. Bianca was nominated by Mrs. Fox for her awesome start in kindergarten, for working hard and setting the positive tone for her classmates. Fantastic work, Bianca!

Dear JCS Families: Jefferson County Schools puts the safety of students and staff first. With temperatures expected this week to reach the mid to upper 90’s, we are taking proactive steps to prevent heat-related illnesses. That means limiting outdoor activities at elementary, middle, and high schools when a heat advisory or warning is in place for Jefferson County. Limitations apply to any physical education classes, outdoor classrooms, field trips, and recess activities. For athletics, we will follow WVSSAC guidelines and consult with certified athletic trainers and medical doctors before making a final decision about practice or games. Current guidelines include safety measures such as practicing without pads, eliminating conditioning activities, moving indoors, or limiting practice time. We recognize the importance of providing appropriate practice time and games and will do what we can to ensure our student-athletes can prepare and compete safely. Schedule changes will be communicated as quickly as possible to limit potential disruption to students and families. We appreciate your support of our students.

A reminder that Jefferson County Schools will be closed on Monday, September 4, in observance of Labor Day. We hope everyone is enjoying their long weekend!

Mrs. Burwell's 4th grade class had fun in the STEAM lab today, learning to problem solve and work as a team. The students had to use engineering and planning to stack 24 cups and construct a successful tower. They discussed as a group whether their tower was successful or not, things they could have done differently, and materials that they would have liked to use if they were doing this activity again in the future. Creative teamwork for the win!

Who wouldn't want to own a Tyson Bagent autographed football?? Tyson was a record-breaking quarterback at Shepherd University and is creating a sensation in the NFL, currently battling for a QB2 spot on the Chicago Bears. Riley Thomas was THRILLED to win the football! Congrats, Riley, and Go, Tyson! Your hometown is cheering you on!
