Jefferson High School recently showcased an Appalachian Heritage display, featuring artifacts representing Indigenous, English, African, German, Irish, and French cultures. Since returning to school, students across the district have been studying Appalachian history and West Virginia culture. Appalachia spans 13 states, including all of West Virginia, and is known for its strong values of family, freedom, and self-reliance. At JCS, we're proud to celebrate the rich history and heritage of our region! 💙💛

We’ve reached the halfway mark of the first nine weeks! Please check your student’s grades on Canvas, and if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact their teacher. Let’s work together to finish out this term strong!

🦸♂️🦸♀️✨ Superheroes Unite at SJE! Under the direction of SJE art teacher Mrs. Fiolek and the entire second-grade team, students drew themselves as superheroes, complete with unique powers or magical tools. But the fun didn't stop there! Fashion students at Washington High School Fashion Class then brought the superhero visions to life with the help of CTE instructor Ms. Magaha. This week, these talented fashion designers presented the finished superheroes to our second graders over lunch! The excitement didn't end with the costumes - SJE students also teamed up with their new WHS friends to create stories about their superheroes. This heartwarming project is a true testament to the power of teamwork, collaboration, caring, and kindness. A huge thank you to everyone involved - this is an experience our students will cherish forever!

Talk about a hands-on history lesson! 📚 Second-graders at Page Jackson Elementary just wrapped up their CKLA unit on the Civil War in style - literally! A special visitor brought artifacts from the era, including authentic uniforms worn by actual soldiers. The young historians also took a field trip to Harpers Ferry to bring the past to life. From artifacts to adventures, these students are proving that learning history can be as exciting as it is educational!

🌍 Culinary adventure alert! Jefferson High School ProStart students recently cooked up a feast fit for foodies of all ages! During a visit to T.A. Lowery Elementary School, these budding chefs dazzled Mrs. Blue's first-grade class with a mouthwatering spread of international flavors from China, India, El Salvador, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Vietnam, and the Philippines. Students enjoyed sharing their knowledge of the different ingredients, tastes, and textures that made each dish unique as they sampled the diverse cuisine. Kudos to our ProStart team for spreading the joy of food, fostering a love of global fare, and serving up smiles one plate at a time! 😋

Thanks to Giant Food for partnering with JCS to fight childhood hunger! Representatives from the local Martin's attended the April 22 meeting of the Jefferson County Board of Education to present a check for $11,984 in support of the Feeding School Kids initiative coordinated by the JCS Department of Child Nutrition. The gift was made possible through community donations from rounding up at checkout and converting Choice Rewards points. Thank you to Martin's and the community for supporting our most vulnerable students!

Crafts, science experiments, reading aloud, and a special conservation project were all on the agenda as the WHS Key Club spent April 22 - Earth Day - with BRP students from Pre-K through second grade. BRP students enjoyed making Earth Day crowns and necklaces, planting seeds, learning about the water cycle, and making their own water filtration "tank" with Key Club members. Afterward, everyone shared a picnic lunch on the playground, and the teens helped pick up litter along BRP's walking trail before they departed. Thank you to these Key Club members for teaching our younger students the true meaning of Earth Day! 🌳🌿🌎

😻 Kindergarteners at North Jefferson Elementary practiced their reading skills on the purr-fect audience! These early readers visited the Animal Welfare Society of Jefferson County this week to practice their reading on shelter cats. The students have worked hard this year learning to read and were excited to show what they know! Afterward, they enjoyed a picnic lunch, learned about what the shelter does, and delivered items for donation. And just to make sure the shelter's other inhabitants didn't feel left out, they also brought along some homemade dog treats!
