Congratulations to the 31 students who represented JCS at the 2024 West Virginia American Choral Directors All-State Choir Conference last weekend in Morgantown. The attendees from Washington High School and all four middle schools comprised the largest-ever group of JCS students to receive invitations to this prestigious choral event! JCS is proud to highlight the unique contribution of school counselors to the public education landscape! As we celebrate National School Counseling Week 2024, check out what some of our own counselors have to say about why they enjoy working with JCS students at the elementary, middle, and high school levels 👉 http://rb.gy/i3px3l

Monday, February 5, marked the 100th day of school at JCS, and students across the district had fun celebrating this exciting milestone! Many dressed up as 100-year-old centenarians, while South Jefferson Elementary students took a different path, celebrating the theme “We Are 100 Days Brighter” by wearing neon or otherwise brightly colored clothes. Check out some of the creativity on display in the images below!

As we kick off Black History Month, JCS is proud to recognize the achievements of Black men and women throughout history with a district-wide student art competition! We invite our numerous talented student artists to highlight the strength and resilience of notable figures in Black History with original artwork that explores creativity and inspires others. Winners will showcase their creations at a community-wide Black History Month celebration on March 2 in Shepherdstown. The contest is open to all JCS middle and high school students. Visit www.jcswv.org/bhm-art for more details!

JANUARY 31, 2024: We would like to provide an update on an external threat reported this morning. Working with our partners in law enforcement, Jefferson County Schools has learned that no credible threat existed to the communities of North Jefferson Elementary School, T.A. Lowery Elementary School, Wildwood Middle School, or Jefferson High School. Upon being detained, law enforcement determined that the suspect in question was training for the U.S. armed forces while wearing a weight belt and did not threaten any of our school communities. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to ensure the safety of our students and staff.

JCS kicked off its annual Math Field Day events this past weekend with the middle school-level competition! Afterward, students relaxed with games and camaraderie while waiting for the winners to be announced. Math Field Day continues tomorrow, January 30, at the elementary level and concludes next Tuesday, February 6, with the high school competition. Stay tuned for a district-wide announcement of all winners then!

Please join the JCS Hispanic/Latino Association this Thursday, February 1, for an informative presentation on financial aid, FAFSA, and scholarship opportunities for our middle and high school students and their families.

Do you want to build a snowman? ☃ Sure, it feels like summer today, but let's rewind to our winter wonderland a week ago! Upon their return to school this week, kindergarteners at Page Jackson Elementary ventured outdoors to build snowmen as a tool for learning about 3D shapes and measurements. These snow friends may have been shortlived, but the hands-on math lesson is what counts!

Shoutout to our JROTC cadets who helped raise over $60,000 for the JCS Shoe and Coat Fund this year as part of their largest annual community service project! JCS teachers established the fund over three decades ago to ensure all students have access to winter-appropriate coats and footwear. Thanks to generous contributions from our community and local businesses, it has grown to support hundreds of students each year. Learn more here 👉 http://rb.gy/d9e08l

Join us for our next STEAMTalks event at Jefferson High School tomorrow evening, Friday, January 26, in person or on Zoom. Featuring presentations by JHS students and community members.

Driswood Elementary School students are showing their love for good attendance with a special Valentine's Day-themed project! 💕 Beginning January 10 through February 14, every DES student receives a paper heart to sign for each day they come to school. Students then post the signed hearts outside their classroom door. By Valentine's Day, each cluster of hearts will connect from room to room, surrounding the DES hallways with a love for attending school! What a fun and creative way to demonstrate how Attendance Matters: All Day, Every Day! 😍 To learn more about this ongoing JCS attendance initiative, visit www.jcswv.org/attendance.
